If you’re a high school student looking to challenge yourself academically, meet peers from around the world, and experience a taste of collegiate life at Yale University, Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is one of the most impactful programs you can consider.
What is YYGS?
Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is a prestigious, two-week academic summer program hosted on Yale University’s campus. Each year, over 1,900 students from more than 150 countries participate, making it one of the most globally diverse pre-college experiences available to high school students.
YYGS offers multiple academic tracks, allowing students to explore fields they’re passionate about:
- IST (Innovations in Science & Technology) – Ideal for students interested in engineering, computer science, physics, biology, or applied sciences.
- PLE (Politics, Law & Economics) – Focused on global affairs, policy, governance, philosophy, and economic systems.
- SGC (Solving Global Challenges) – A cross-disciplinary program designed for students passionate about world issues such as sustainability, equity, public health, or development.
Students engage in lectures, seminars, simulations, group projects, and discussions led by Yale faculty, researchers, and graduate students. The program also includes workshops, college guidance sessions, and cultural exchanges that encourage students to learn beyond the classroom.
YYGS is need-aware but highly committed to access: the program offers millions of dollars in need-based financial aid every year, available to both U.S. and international students.
Why YYGS Matters
YYGS stands out because it delivers far more than academic enrichment. It shapes students personally, intellectually, and globally.
1. Real College-Level Learning
YYGS introduces students to the rigor and depth of university-style learning. The mix of lectures and small-group discussions pushes students to think critically, articulate ideas, and collaborate—skills that help them transition smoothly into university life.
2. A Truly Global Community
Few programs bring together students from over 150 nationalities. YYGS exposes participants to diverse cultures, perspectives, and problem-solving styles, helping them build a global mindset and lifelong friendships.
3. Exploration of Future Paths
Students often use YYGS to test academic interests—STEM, social science, policy, global challenges, etc. The experience helps many refine their future college majors or career goals.
4. Personal Growth & Confidence
Being on campus, living in dorms, and engaging with challenging content fosters independence, leadership, and self-awareness—attributes that stay with students long after the program ends.
5. A Strong Academic Credential
Participation in YYGS is recognized globally. While it doesn’t guarantee admission to any institution, it signals academic curiosity, initiative, and global engagement—qualities valued in college applications.
